     From watching the film Mary and Martha, which portrays local communities lacking resources to administer vaccines, to listening to my mom's childhood stories of how grateful she was for the free lunch provided to her by the local community center, I was inspired to do what I can to help local communities in need.  While I was planning my 8th birthday in 2013, my wish was for my guests to donate a check in lieu of a gift, so I decided to create an organization to do just that; www.birthdaygiftsforcharity.org. It blossomed and evolved from donating birthday gifts to also funds generated by organizing tag sales when I got older.

     I discovered tag sales at age six when my grandmother took me with her to play "the pirates looking for treasures game."  She taught me the joys of haggling at these sales to buy items at my price!  My grandma's game turned into ideas for creating my own tag sale events to raise funds. I  solicit unwanted wares from neighbors, family, and friends and advertise the charity events. On tag sale day, I haul all the donations from my attic, setting up shop along my driveway. All  tag sale  proceeds are donated to various causes ranging from community food banks to local charities in need of funding.  Since 2013, donations by Birthday Gifts for charity totaled $8000+ and it shall continue to do so as long as community organizations are in need.
